The Iowa City Police Department has attempted to notify these residents directly with letters today, Sunday, June 2.
The evacuation is being recommended due to deteriorating conditions in the area and impairment of response times for emergency service vehicles (police, fire and ambulance), and for the safety of emergency response personnel.
If residents need assistance with evacuation efforts, they are asked to contact the United Way of Johnson County disaster call center at 319-337-8657 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For information or referral after hours dial 2-1-1 or 1-866-469-2211.
Mandatory evacuations have not been issued to date, but may be issued in the coming days or weeks based on the changing flooding conditions in neighborhoods.
Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time due to detours and road closures. For up-to-date travel information visit www.icgov.org/flood.
As waters continue to rise, citizens are reminded to stay away from riverbanks and barricaded areas. Non-residents are urged to stay out of recommended evacuation areas.
Iowa City officials will continue to closely monitor Iowa River and area creek levels.
