In its most recent report for Coralville, Moody’s noted just two strengths for the city’s finances: increased funding liquidity and the fact that Coralville is situated adjacent to financially healthy Iowa City and the University of Iowa.
Tom Kriz, who has worked as Johnson County treasurer since 1999 in addition to experience in the banking industry, said the impact of nearby entities goes both ways: A strong-rated municipality such as Iowa City can boost its neighbors’ standings, while a weak-rated municipality such as Coralville can threaten its neighbors.
“It’s certainly a factor I would look at if I were on the other side, looking at components of a larger area. Say Coralville may be a contributing factor to the negative, but there’s all these other positive aspects about this community,” Kriz said, adding UI offers stability to finances across the region.
