The Englert Theatre’s Douglas & Linda Paul Gallery welcomes Iowa native and acclaimed concert photographer Kim Reed. Reed’s exhibit “Electric Stars” will run June 28 through July 30 in The Englert Theatre’s second floor gallery with free admission. A reception will be held Friday July 19 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
Electric Stars highlights a selection of 40 of Reeds’ works, spanning over three decades. Reed describes the exhibit as “an attempt to entice the viewer of each photo to study the artist in a slightly different way.” The photographs are altered images of the performers that offer a fresh perspective on the “particular moment in time.” Reed looks beyond what is in front of him and uses his distinct technique to expose a previously unseen perspective of the image. “By altering the colors, intensity, and overall look of the original shot I found a totally different image beginning to emerge,” Reed said.
Hailing from Eastern Iowa, Reed graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 with a B.A. in Education. After graduating, Reed took a teaching position in Sydney, Australia where he also worked as a music editor for a national magazine. After 15 years, Reed returned to the United States where he continued to follow his passion of photojournalism and music, interviewing such music icons as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Elton John. Reed retired from his teaching career of 35 years and now dedicates his time to pursuing music and photography.
Electric Stars will be displayed in the Douglas & Linda Paul Gallery, which is located on the second floor of the Englert Theatre. The exhibit will be available Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. as well as during select performances. For more information, call (319) 688-2653 or visit englert.org.
