Farmers Market Profile: 'Local Burrito Catering' Looks to Launch Food Truck

Kyle Sieck, owner and chef of Local Burrito, also sellls fresh juice at the Farmers Market.

I spoke with Kyle Sieck on Tuesday at his fresh juice booth at the Mercer Park Farmers Market.

Sieck said he has been a mainstay at both the Wednesday and Saturday farmers market, where he is known as the chef and owner of Local Burrito Catering, offering burritos made with fresh locally produced ingredients. He also produces drinks made of fresh fruit juices with additional spices such as ginger and mint.

Sieck said that the new Mercer Market has a way to go before catching up to its downtown big brother market, but it is currently doing a good job filling the farmers market need for people with different schedules and coming from different demographics that is served by the downtown market.

For Sieck the Mercer Market just provides him another venue to put his local foods philosophy to work.

"I went to college to study environmentalism and learn how to change the world," Sieck said. "Starting small businesses, utilizing local resources, and putting good food in people's stomachs is kind of what my mission is right now."

He said he is excited to be launching a new Local Burrito food truck that will be serving the Iowa City area with breakfast burritos all day as well as other lunch and dinner items using locally created ingredients. You can follow the food truck's progress at the Local Burrito website.
