Clarahan points out the invisible boundaries where an elegant, space-age-looking auditorium will one day rise, uphill from the old auditorium and at least 2 feet above the 500-year flood plain — correcting the fatal flaw of the original.

“It’s just an exciting project to be a part of,” said Clarahan, an executive with Mortenson Construction, which UI hired to manage the construction of the $176 million auditorium, as well as the new $153 million School of Music downtown. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime project to replace something as historic as Hancher. It’s more than just a building; it’s an institution. It was a coveted project in that we know how much Hancher means to the community.”
