Johnson County Sheriff: Man Arrested After Playing Demolition Derby with Stolen Pickup, Semi

A Washington man is facing serious felony charges after his arrest and involvement in the act with two other co-defendants.


A 21-year-old Washington man is facing felony criminal mischief and theft charges after he allegedly worked with two other men to steal a truck, steal a semi, and subsequently ram one into the other.

Travis Alan Peterson, 21, of Washington was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 1:49 p.m. on Monday and has admitted to taking part in the crime, which took place back in January in Kalona, according to a criminal complaint from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Peterson has since been transported into the custody of Washington County law enforcement.

According to the criminal complaint, Peterson told authorities that he and two co-defendants  stole a 2009 GMC pickup at 2:30 a.m. in the morning on Jan. 22, 2013 and drove it to the Farmers' Hen House, an organic egg farm in Kalona. They then stole a semi from the business and began ramming the pickup with the semi truck.

Damage to the pickup was listed at $23,900, with $11, 275 worth of damage to the semi. Peterson is facing charges of first-degree criminal mischief, a Class C Felony and first-degree theft, also a Class C Felony.
