Read Public Records in Peter Gray, University of Iowa Sexual Harassment Flap

Peter Gray was a University of Iowa athletics department official who worked in student advising before resigning. An investigation found he had violated the school's sexual harassment policy.

Some people just want to see it for themselves, so here it is: hundreds of pages of documents that were returned connected to the end of Peter Gray's time at the University of Iowa.

Gray, associate director of athletic student services and director of academic advising and counseling, resigned last month just as details of an investigation became public. The investigation found years of sexual harassment towards students and others.

Fair warning, there's not a lot of information of value, which is often the case with public records requests. What's more noteworthy may be what's not in the file, in this case.

The university didn't charge anything for the records. Obtaining a large quantity of public records can, and often does, prove costly. These hundreds of pages of documents about Peter Gray from more than 30 high ranking university personnel could conceivably cost hundreds of dollars, if not thousands.

University of Iowa public records fees range from $30 an hour for staff time up to $75 per hour when using a computer database to get the records.

The investigation against Gray found he created a hostile work environment and acted inappropriately with students and student-athletes, the investigation summary stated. Among other things, he was accused of trading money and football tickets for sexual favors, inappropriately touching students, offering a student oral sex and having inappropriate photos on his work computer.
