This Week in Iowa City Weather: Sunny with Thunderstorms Possible Tuesday Night through Thursday

We'll have a mix of sun with some scattered showers this week in Iowa City.

So finally the flood waters are starting to recede in Johnson and Linn County, and although officials are keeping a wary eye on water levels on the Iowa River, the threat of rain does not necessarily correlate to a threat of mass flooding.

This is especially good because it looks like the next three days there might be a good chance for some thunderstorms.

According to a forecast from the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities the chance for thunderstorms will begin Tuesday night and carry on through Thursday.

  • Late Afternoon A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Southeast wind around 10 mph.
  • Tonight A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Wednesday Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 5 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Wednesday Night Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 2am. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Thursday A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.
Weather Underground's forecast for Iowa City concurs with this analysis, also showing that temperatures should drop from high in the 80s down to the 70s by Friday, which also will be bereft of rain. Unfortunately the chance for storms may return again from Saturday through the following Monday.
