Wichita is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Wichita has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The Keeper of the Plains is a 44-foot-tall steel sculpture that stands at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers in downtown Wichita. The sculpture, which features flames that are lit every night, honors the Native American tribes that once inhabited the area.
  • The Wichita Art Museum is home to an impressive collection of American art, including works by Edward Hopper, Mary Cassatt and Winslow Homer. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and events throughout the year.
  • The Old Cowtown Museum is a living history museum that allows visitors to step back in time and experience life in Wichita in the late 19th century. Costumed interpreters demonstrate blacksmithing, weaving and other traditional crafts, and there are also horse-drawn wagon rides and live performances.
  • Wichita is home to several unique parks, including the Botanica Wichita Gardens, which features over 18 acres of themed gardens, a butterfly house and a children's garden. The Great Plains Nature Center offers hiking trails, wildlife exhibits and educational programs, while the Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the United States, with over 3,000 animals from 400 species.
  • Wichita is home to one of the largest community theaters in the United States, the Music Theatre of Wichita. The theater presents Broadway-style productions throughout the year, featuring both local talent and professional performers.
