📰 News we're reading

1. WSU part of major Wichita tourism development (derbyinformer.com) — Wichita State University is partnering on a championship-level tennis complex at the Ignite at K-96 sports development, recently approved by the Wichita City Council. The facility would give WSU tennis modern indoor and outdoor courts and help Wichita attract major collegiate and high school tournaments. This project aims to boost local tourism, year-round sports activity, and the city’s national profile.

2. Scammer issuing fake parking tickets at Wichita mall (ksn.com) — Wichita police are warning shoppers that someone is leaving fake parking tickets on cars at Towne East Square and that you can safely throw them away. The bogus citations misuse city code references and contain obvious wording errors, but could still rattle busy holiday visitors. If you’re parked at the mall, double-check any ticket before paying or sharing personal information.

3. Former Wichita teacher pleads not guilty to sex with student (ksn.com) — A former Wichita Public Schools teacher has pleaded not guilty to charges related to unlawful sexual relations with an older teen student from Wichita North High School. Her pretrial conference is set for Feb. 19, and she remains free on bond. Wichita parents and students may want to follow this case as it moves through Sedgwick County court.

4. Kansas museums see overall boost despite national attendance decline (kwch.com) — Wichita’s Kansas Aviation Museum and Exploration Place are helping Kansas museums defy the national slump in post-pandemic attendance, with record or steady visitor numbers. Leaders credit programs like the Sunflower Summer Program and a focus on family-friendly, innovative experiences, while continuing to push for renewed state support that could keep Wichita attractions thriving into 2026 and beyond.

5. Security emphasized for churches preparing for holiday celebrations (kwch.com) — Wichita’s Chapel Hill United Methodist Church is ramping up security for Christmas services, hiring off-duty police and adding other measures after past break-ins and safety concerns. Church leaders say they’re trying to keep worshippers safe without losing the welcoming atmosphere, and they urge other local congregations to plan ahead for potential threats.
