On September 24, 2021, a 17-year-old male was booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center by the Wichita Police Department for three counts battery on a law enforcement officer. While in custody, the juvenile assaulted JIAC staff and was restrained. After restraining the juvenile, he became unresponsive and EMS was summoned. The juvenile was transported by EMS to a local hospital and admitted. On September 26, 2021, the juvenile died at the hospital.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations is investigating the in-custody death and the Sheriff’s Office is assisting.   Â
