On January 20, 2022, an inmate at a local area hospital was receiving treatment for a serious chronic illness. The inmate’s health deteriorated; therefore, the family was contacted in order to arrange visitation. At approximately 1653 hours, the family decided to stop medical assistance treatment. At approximately 1716 hours, the inmate was declared deceased by an attending physician.

In accordance with state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigations was contacted. In addition, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit was contacted, even though the death appeared to be medical related and due to natural causes.
