The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a press conference Thursday, September 30 at 11:00 am to discuss the tragic events leading to the death and subsequent KBI and Sheriff’s Office investigation of Cedric “CJ” Lofton, of Wichita. Lofton was briefly in the custody of the Sedgwick County Corrections Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) after being booked on September 24, 2021 for four counts of battery on a law enforcement officer by the Wichita Police Department. While in custody, Lofton assaulted JIAC staff and was restrained. After restraining the juvenile, he became unresponsive and EMS was summoned. Lofton was transported to a local hospital and died on September 26, 2021.
Sheriff Jeff Easter, District Attorney Marc Bennett, and Sedgwick County Department of Corrections Director Glenda Martens will participate in the press conference.
