On August 28, 2021, at approximately 6:37 PM, deputies were requested to assist the Kansas Highway Patrol with a road rage incident resulting in a shooting in the southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike (I-35) near mile marker 36. When deputies arrived they found Jerry J. Gehlen (34) suffering from a gunshot wound. Gehlen was transported by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Involved parties and witnesses were transported to Sheriff Investigations, interviewed, and released. At this time, the shooting appears to have been in self-defense.
