Wichita Public Library Launches Virtual ‘Kansas Reads To Preschoolers’

The Wichita Public Library will virtually celebrate ‘Kansas Reads to Preschoolers,’ a month-long one book reading program for young readers.

This year, the book is Groovy Joe: Ice Cream and Dinosaurs by Eric Litwin. It tells the story of a guitar-strumming, ice cream-eating dog who wrangles three hungry dinosaurs into joining the musical fun.

Library staff created an online platform (wichitalibrary.org/prek) for children, caregivers and educators to access the book for free with a library card through Scholastic BookFlix and the Library’s collection, downloadable activities related to the book, and a special video teaser featuring librarians sharing their favorite ice cream flavor and dinosaur.

At 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, the Library will premiere a special educational video on its YouTube channel for children and parents. This “Sesame Street” like video will teach children about ice cream and dinosaurs.

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual event that promotes reading to all Kansas children from birth to age five. Through the statewide program, educators, librarians and caregivers are encouraged to read the chosen title in November. The State Library of Kansas, along with a committee, chooses the book.
