Second Case Of Monkeypox Reported In Maine: Officials

AUGUSTA, ME — Maine's second case of monkeypox was confirmed by state health officials Monday after a Penobscot County man tested positive for the disease.

The case was confirmed in a social media post by Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In order to protect his privacy, no further information was released about the patient.

As of Monday, nearly 5,200 cases of monkeypox were confirmed in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New York has the most cases at 1,345, followed by California and Illinois.

Montana and Wyoming are the only two states without a confirmed case, according to the CDC. Vermont confirmed its first case Friday.

To date, there have been more than 22,000 monkeypox cases reported in nearly 80 countries since May, with about 75 suspected deaths in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Congo.

On Friday, Brazil and Spain reported deaths linked to monkeypox, the first reported outside Africa. Spain reported a second monkeypox death Saturday.
