📰 News we're reading

1. Here's Why Ice Skating Is Hands Down the Best Winter Activity in Maine (wjbq.com) — If you’re looking to get outside this winter in Augusta, local rinks at Williams Park and Mill Park offer easy, family-friendly skating close to home. The writer also suggests a Portland rink and frozen ponds around Maine, but keeps circling back to how simple, local park skating can brighten cold days here.

2. Federal marijuana reclassification could yield tax benefits for Maine's cannabis industry (mainepublic.org) — Statehouse work in Augusta to separate Maine’s tax code from federal rules is now paying off as a federal move to reclassify marijuana could ease tax burdens on cannabis businesses. Maine industry experts say the change may free up cash for expansion while raising new questions about how federal drug schedules mesh with state-regulated cannabis markets.

3. Court Blocks HUD Changes That Would Have Left Thousands Without Housing (maine.gov) — From Augusta, state officials report that a federal judge has temporarily blocked HUD rule changes that Maine leaders say could have pushed about 1,200 Mainers into homelessness. The injunction keeps Continuum of Care housing funds flowing under previous rules, protecting vulnerable residents statewide while a multistate lawsuit against the Trump Administration’s policy moves forward.

4. Conservation Groups File Appeal Urging CMP Compliance With Mature Forest Requirements (maineaudubon.org) — Conservation groups based in Maine, in a release datelined from Augusta, are appealing a state decision on Central Maine Power’s conservation plan for the NECEC transmission line. They argue the plan doesn’t truly protect mature forest habitat in western Maine and want the Board of Environmental Protection to require more land with older trees and stronger protections.
