📰 News we're reading

1. Catholic Charities Maine will move to space next to Lewiston basilica (wmtw.com) — A long-vacant priory beside Saints Peter and Paul Basilica in downtown Lewiston is being transformed into Catholic Charities Maine’s new Central Maine hub. By fall 2026, the building is expected to house senior services, programs for visually impaired children, and social justice support, significantly expanding local resources right in the city’s core.

2. Start Here: Homelessness funding loss + trauma center reduction (sunjournal.com) — Lewiston residents are seeing a major shift in emergency care as Central Maine Medical Center lets its trauma center status lapse, likely sending more serious cases to Portland or Bangor. Local Catholics are also exploring ways to better showcase the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, while regional homelessness programs face steep federal funding changes that could ripple through central Maine.

3. Maine Cancer Foundation awards grants to boost patient access to care (mainebiz.biz) — Lewiston residents should know two city-based nonprofits just received Maine Cancer Foundation grants to improve cancer patients’ access to transportation and family support. The Djiboutian American Community Empowerment Project and Ifka Community Services each earned $7,500 as part of $660,000 awarded statewide. These funds aim to ease travel, lodging, and other barriers that can delay vital treatment.

4. Trailer Park Conglomerates With Maine Holdings Targeted by Congress Over Rent Increases (themainewire.com) — Lewiston residents at Country Lane Estates and Stetson Brook Estates are among mobile-home park tenants affected as Congress probes big investors over steep rent hikes. Two national firms with Maine holdings, including those Lewiston parks, face questions about large lot rent increases and how their business practices impact vulnerable manufactured-home owners statewide.

5. New Mainers express gratitude as Toy Fund brightens kids' first holidays in America (pressherald.com) — Lewiston-area families can benefit from the Portland Press Herald Toy Fund, which buys toys and books for children in Androscoggin and nearby counties using reader donations. New Mainers share powerful stories of hardship and gratitude as they seek help making their first U.S. holiday season bright. Donor names are published in both the Press Herald and Lewiston Sun Journal unless they choose anonymity.
