My caregiver is one of the nicest people! I could not go to a nursing home. It is wonderful to be in my own home." Dr. Walter F. Keller

Dr. Walter F. Keller knows the importance of staying active, adopting good nutritional habits, and other ways to keep healthy that would lead to living independently as long as possible.
After all, Dr. Keller was a thoracic surgeon in Portland, Maine, for more than 20 years. He received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and later became affiliated with multiple hospitals in Southern Maine, including Mercy Hospital of Portland and Maine Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

A few years before retiring, Dr. Keller was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a disease that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Over time, Dr. Keller needed around-the-clock care in order to live independently in his own home.

While in a rehabilitation facility, Dr. Keller met with Constance McFarland, care coordinator at FCP Live-In, a leading live-in home caregiver provider that services families throughout the New England area. Constance conducted an intake with Dr. Keller to determine his needs and completed the paperwork necessary for him to have a live-in caregiver to help him maintain his independence. An FCP Live-In caregiver was assigned to him promptly.

Dr. Keller thinks the world of his live-in caregiver, Joey, who is proficient in assisting Dr. Keller in using a motorized wheelchair and a Hoyer lift, which allows the safe lift and transfer of patients. Joey also helps Dr. Keller with his daily routine and does light housekeeping, cooking meals, laundry, and other household needs. Plus, Dr. Keller says if he ever has a question, he can call Sarah Levesque, FCP Live In Field Supervisor, and she always responds promptly and helps him with anything he needs.
"My caregiver is one of the nicest people I have ever met," Dr. Keller said. "He cooks for me and helps me with whatever I need help with."
"Dr. Keller is a beloved and retired medical director. He is such an interesting man," Constance said. "It was wonderful and rewarding to help him return to his home. More than a few of his former co-workers reached out to thank us for helping him remain independent and at home!"
FCP Live-In Supports Seniors' Independence
FCP Live-In has been supporting seniors and their families all over the Northeast for over a quarter of a century. FCP Live-In is not an assisted living facility but a company that provides compassionate professional caregivers whose one-on-one care for clients allows them to age in place. Before a live-in caregiver is placed in the home, FCP Live-In does a home assessment and creates a care plan that is maintained by the caregiver and monitored by FCP Live-In. With help from FCP Live-In, older adults can stay in their homes and avoid significant disruption to their lives by having to move into an assisted living facility or a nursing home.
David Anthony, FCP Live-In's Founder and CEO, said he started the company because options are limited when it comes to caring for a loved one. For instance, older adults who need assistance either have a home health aide who comes to their home for a few hours a day or move into an assisted living facility. David founded FCP Live-In to resolve this dilemma.
"What if you take the best of both?" David asked. "An insured and bonded live-in caregiver that provides one-on-one care stays in the home and is there 24/7. That's where FCP Live-In comes in."
All of FCP Live-In's caregivers are nurse's aides, home health aides, and personal care aides with at least two years of professional experience. But before they are hired, applicants must undergo a round of in-depth interviews, and only those who stand out are invited for a third interview. Applicants must also undergo and pass a skills assessment and perform a personality profile to determine if they are a good fit for a live-in care position.
And that's not all; once hired, FCP Live-In uses advanced technology to provide the best caregiver-to-client matches based on client needs and best-suited personality chemistry.
FCP Live-In Caregivers Provide A Wide Range of Care
One of the most prominent challenges families face is finding care for older adults with dementia, according to Andrea Maroto, FCP Live-In's Regional Sales Manager, who has been helping seniors and their families for a little over two decades.
"The one challenge that families and their loved ones always mention is that they don't want to leave their home, their spouse, their memories," Andrea said.
However, families need not worry because FCP Live-In caregivers provide care to clients with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common form of dementia.
"I often think about how wonderful it is for seniors to stay home and get the care they deserve and need while not losing what is most important to them; their family, friends, and the special place they call home," Andrea added.
Besides dementia, FCP Live-In caregivers provide care for clients with various conditions, including diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, amputations, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Caregivers also offer compassion and support with end-of-life care, hospice care, and in-home hospice care.
"I am excited to be a part of such a wonderful and needed service to help our seniors maintain their independence in the comfort of their own home," Andrea said.
Dr. Keller is appreciative of the services FCP Live-In provides that allow him to live safely and securely in the comfort of his own home. The doctor said he highly recommends FCP Live-In to any senior who wishes to remain in their own home but needs a helping hand.
"I could not go to a nursing home," Dr. Keller said. "It is wonderful to be in my own home."
