📰 News we're reading

• Firefighters swiftly extinguish blaze at Westbrook's Cintas uniform supplier (wgme.com) — Fire crews quickly knocked down a Friday night blaze at the Cintas uniform facility in neighboring Westbrook, preventing more serious damage to the closed building. Investigators believe a dryer that drops garments onto a conveyor belt sparked the fire, and the report also flags separate recent police activity at Portland’s Fore River Sanctuary involving human remains found in a tent.

• Church of Jesus Christ announces Maine's first temple during stake Christmas fireside (deseret.com) — Members of the Portland Maine Stake learned Sunday that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will build Maine’s first temple in Portland, though the exact site and construction timeline aren’t set yet. The announcement, delivered in North Yarmouth by Elder Allen D. Haynie, marks the first temple decision made under new church president Dallin H. Oaks and will shift local Latter-day Saints from traveling out of state for temple worship.

• More loons are filling Maine's lakes with their ghostlike calls (butlereagle.com) — From a Portland dateline, Maine Audubon reports that common loons are rebounding across the state, with adult and chick numbers up sharply since the 1980s. Lawmakers’ bans on lead tackle and boat-speed limits are helping, but conservationists warn winter ice and other threats still put these iconic birds at risk.
