Maine is a witch haven!

Pine Tree State can claim two famous witches

Maine can now lay claim to two internationally-known witches.

Quick - can you name which witches?

If you said Margaret Hamilton and Heather Donahue, you're a star.

Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of The West in "The Wizard of Oz," owned property off Southport.

She lived in New York City for most of her adult life, and summered in a cottage on Cape Island, Maine.

Tour boat operators sometimes entertained their passengers by referring to Cape Island as “Witch’s Island.”

Donahue, who starred in "The Blair Witch Project," lives just north of Westport, in Freedom.

She bought property there in 2020 and moved to Maine in 2022.

Donahue, who said she chose the Pine Tree State for the rural lifestyle, successfully ran for the town's Select Board in 2023.
