Where To Eat
Maine is well-known for its lobster, thanks to its coastal location — and in Portland, restaurants serve plenty of it. James Beard Award-winning Eventide Oyster Co. offers a unique take on the local delicacy, serving up brown butter lobster rolls on bao buns. Becky’s Diner takes a more classic approach, offering a variety of freshly caught platters and dishes, along with many non-seafood selections. Other food options in the area include Duckfat, a staple since 2005 serving up crispy duck-fat-fried Belgian frites, and Hot Suppa for hearty Southern dishes.
After dinner, head to the Allagash Brewing Company for a locally brewed pint. (Tip: Short on time? Allagash has a food menu, too. Grab a fresh lobster roll, a brew and a house-made whoopie pie — Maine’s official state treat — to try three delicacies in one stop!) Alternatively, for a night of stargazing and cocktails, head six stories up to the Luna Rooftop Bar which overlooks the waterfront with views as far as Casco Bay.
Things To Do
Portland has ample museums for all ages and interests! For kids, visit the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, where they can interact with exhibits, including dressing up in theatre costumes, exploring the indoor climbing structure and getting their hands dirty in the outdoor adventure area. The Portland Museum of Art is another museum perfect for the whole family, offering rotating exhibits and a jam-packed calendar of events. For those hoping to learn about the local history, head to the Portland Observatory — the country’s last remaining historic maritime signal station.
If you’re looking to get outdoors, the Portland Farmers Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer, showcasing a variety of farm-fresh, locally grown foods and goods. Bring cash — some farmers don’t accept credit.
More outdoor adventures await at the city’s many parks and landmarks, including the iconic Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park. While the lighthouse is only open once per year — on Maine Open Lighthouse Day, September 13, 2025 — visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding 90-acre park year-round.
