Road Trip The Northeast: Portland, Mystic & More For Less
Explore coastal views, savor local eats and check out these budget-friendly tips.

The Northeast offers stunning destinations, and Portland, Maine, tops the list! From coastal views and historic charm to incredible food, this guide covers Portland’s must-see spots and a few more road trip gems, all while keeping your travels budget-friendly.
Exploring Portland: Where to Start
Portland offers a perfect mix of history, food and scenic waterfront views. Whether you’re strolling through Old Port, indulging in fresh seafood or exploring its vibrant arts scene, there’s something for everyone.
Where To Eat
Maine is well-known for its lobster, thanks to its coastal location — and in Portland, restaurants serve plenty of it. James Beard Award-winning Eventide Oyster Co. offers a unique take on the local delicacy, serving up brown butter lobster rolls on bao buns. Becky’s Diner takes a more classic approach, offering a variety of freshly caught platters and dishes, along with many non-seafood selections. Other food options in the area include Duckfat, a staple since 2005 serving up crispy duck-fat-fried Belgian frites, and Hot Suppa for hearty Southern dishes.
After dinner, head to the Allagash Brewing Company for a locally brewed pint. (Tip: Short on time? Allagash has a food menu, too. Grab a fresh lobster roll, a brew and a house-made whoopie pie — Maine’s official state treat — to try three delicacies in one stop!) Alternatively, for a night of stargazing and cocktails, head six stories up to the Luna Rooftop Bar which overlooks the waterfront with views as far as Casco Bay.
Things To Do
Portland has ample museums for all ages and interests! For kids, visit the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, where they can interact with exhibits, including dressing up in theatre costumes, exploring the indoor climbing structure and getting their hands dirty in the outdoor adventure area. The Portland Museum of Art is another museum perfect for the whole family, offering rotating exhibits and a jam-packed calendar of events. For those hoping to learn about the local history, head to the Portland Observatory — the country’s last remaining historic maritime signal station.
If you’re looking to get outdoors, the Portland Farmers Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer, showcasing a variety of farm-fresh, locally grown foods and goods. Bring cash — some farmers don’t accept credit.
More outdoor adventures await at the city’s many parks and landmarks, including the iconic Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park. While the lighthouse is only open once per year — on Maine Open Lighthouse Day, September 13, 2025 — visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding 90-acre park year-round. Along the way, embrace nature by venturing along the many hiking trails or settling down for a picnic by the water.

More Northeast Road Trip Stops
The adventure doesn’t stop in Portland — there are many more Northeast road trip destinations to explore! Below are a few places we recommend adding to your itinerary this year.
Newport, RI
If your trip takes you to southern New England, spend a weekend exploring the country’s smallest state in Newport! Visitors will travel over the 11,000+ foot Claiborne Pell Bridge before entering the city packed with colonial history and nautical beauty. From enduring the 3.5-mile oceanside Cliff Walk to roaming the halls of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and touring the famous, lavish mansions of the past, there’s something for everyone.
Mystic, CT
Further down the coast is Mystic — home to walkable attractions like the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic Aquarium and the Olde Mystic Village. There are ample places to explore across the charming village, with plenty of shopping, history and nature all around. End the day by grabbing a slice at the famous Mystic Pizza, which rose to fame with the 1988 film of the same name.
Finger Lakes, NY
From wineries and farm-to-table restaurants to local events and hiking, there’s no shortage of things to do in New York’s Finger Lakes! Whether you enjoy kayaking on the water or browsing aviation history at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, the region offers the perfect blend of history and culture in one breathtaking destination.
Ocean City, NJ
Extending eight miles across the coastal area, Ocean City’s beaches have been named the best in the Northeast, offering pillowy sand and waves fit for surfing. Visitors can walk along the 2.5-mile Ocean City Boardwalk, where they’ll find plenty of classic arcade games, amusement rides and food options for the whole family.
Conway, NH
Established in 1765, Conway is a serene destination for a relaxing family getaway. Hop aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad or catch a glimpse of the waterfalls at Diana’s Baths before kicking back at the Tuckerman Brewing Company. (Tip: Drive the 34.5-mile Kancamagus Highway through White Mountain National Forest, where you might spot moose and other wildlife!)
Smart Ways To Save On Your Road Trip
Don’t let high costs stop you from enjoying the fun during your vacation! Before you hit the road, prepare by following these cost-saving travel tips:
Travel on Off-Peak Days
Do research before you book your trip to snag some deals; many attractions — like museums — offer free visitation days and discounted rates when you buy tickets in advance. If possible, travel during the off-season or weekdays to take advantage of less crowded attractions and more affordable hotel and rental rates.
Choose A Fuel-Efficient Car
If you’re renting, opt for a car with good gas mileage or economical features like hybrid mode. Some car rental companies allow you to choose your vehicle upon arrival, and many allow you to reserve cars with these options in advance.
Tip: Certain credit cards offer free rental car insurance coverage when you book with the card. Check with your provider to see if you can decline coverage from the rental company — this can save you money on daily insurance fees!
Stock Up on Groceries
Patronizing local grocery stores can save money and time by avoiding costly restaurant bills — and long wait times — while trying local goods. If you prefer not to cook, check out the prepared food section, which usually has more than enough options to quickly assemble a satisfying meal. While you’re there, be sure to grab some road trip snacks to pack in your car cooler!
Whether you’re headed to Portland or planning a Northeast road trip, these tips will help you travel smarter — without breaking the bank!
