Rare, Bright Blue Lobster Caught In Maine Harbor: VIDEO

Lobsterman Chris Green showed off his extremely unique catch in a video posted to TikTok.

PORTLAND, ME — Maine lobsterman Chris Green defied all odds recently when he made a one-in-2 million catch while lobstering in Portland Harbor.

In a video posted to TikTok, Green showed off his catch: a rare, bright blue lobster. Green, who has been lobstering for more than a decade, told WMTW the lobster weighed a little more than a pound.

What makes a lobster blue? Its color is a result of a genetic abnormality that causes them to produce more of a certain protein than other lobsters, according to a BBC report.

The odds of catching one are, in fact, 1 in 2 million, an Oxford zoologist told the BBC.

This isn't the first time a uniquely-colored lobster has been caught in U.S. waters. In 2021, lobsterman Bill Coppersmith caught an iridescent "cotton candy" lobster in Casco Bay. In New England, a Boston seafood company caught a similarly rare albino lobster off the Maine coast in February. And in July, a Gloucester fisherman pulled an unusual blue lobster out of the ocean.

As for Green, he hung on to his unique catch. He told WMTW he plans to donate the lobster to a local aquarium.
