South Portland City Council to hear plan to revitalize former middle school (wgme.com) — South Portland is weighing a nearly $200 million plan to turn the former Mahoney Middle School into a new Mahoney City Center with a library, police station, and upgraded fire station. Residents are split between supporting the civic complex and pushing for affordable housing, and the City Council will take up the proposal on January 13 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
   

2. 'I learned so much there': Fork Food Lab in South Portland at risk of foreclosure (newscentermaine.com) — A key South Portland nonprofit, Fork Food Lab, is at risk of losing its building to foreclosure, threatening dozens of small food businesses that rely on its shared kitchen. Local entrepreneurs, including Cape Whoopies’ owner with a South Portland storefront, credit the lab with helping them grow and worry about losing its support.
   

3. New bridge links Eastern Trail through Scarborough (pressherald.com) — Work on the Eastern Trail is bringing South Portland much closer to a fully connected off-road route all the way to Kittery. A new bridge over Scarborough’s Nonesuch River and near-complete segments toward the Wainwright Sports Complex will soon create a continuous 16-mile path linking Bug Light Park in South Portland with downtown Saco.
   

4. Parents heartbroken after 2 Maine students killed by school buses in a month (pressherald.com) — South Portland school board members and parents are grappling with fear and grief after two Maine children were killed in recent school bus incidents, even as they continue to trust local bus drivers. Voices from South Portland, Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, and other towns are calling for renewed attention to driver training and safety policies while urging families not to abandon school buses, which remain statistically among the safest ways for kids to travel.
   

5. High schools Wednesday: South Portland boys basketball stays unbeaten (pressherald.com) — South Portland’s boys and girls basketball teams both rolled past Bonny Eagle, with the unbeaten boys winning at home behind big nights from Gabe Jackson and Darius Johnson. The girls dominated in Standish, while other Maine hoops and hockey scores round out a busy high school slate.
