Boy Dies In Flash Flood, Water Rescues Across MD Amid Storms

Flood warnings and watches were issued in parts of Maryland Thursday night, and a boy died after stormwater swept him into a drainage pipe.

MOUNT AIRY, MD — A boy playing in stormwater Thursday died after flash flooding swept him away, reports said, as severe thunderstorms pounded Maryland on Thursday afternoon, bringing flash flooding that was closing roads, knocking out power, and prompting flood warnings and watches in some areas.

In Mount Airy, the boy was playing with friends about 5:20 p.m. when the rainfall pushed him into a drainage pipe that led to a stormwater retention pond, Carroll County officials told WBAL. His body was found by a bystander, and first responders pronounced the child dead.

The boy was 13 years old, a spokesman with the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department told FOX Baltimore.

The deadly mishap took place in the 200 block of West Watersville Road in Carroll County. The Mount Airy Police Department is investigating the death investigation.

Strong winds have left about 3,600 utility customers without power in Maryland as of 11:30 p.m., according to PowerOutage.US, a tracking site.

The National Weather Service recorded 2 to 4 inches of rain northeast of Baltimore around Perry Hall, Honeygo, Joppatowne, Kingsville, and Edgewood on Thursday afternoon.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services tweeted the department had responded to at least four rescues before 5 p.m. with "considerable flooding in the Bethesda/Potomac area."

Harford County officials said Winters Run Road in Abingdon and Joppa, and Houcks MIll Road in Monkton were closed by flooding.

A tornado warning was issued for parts of Harford County earlier in the afternoon, the NWS said, after a confirmed waterspout was seen just offshore near Bowleys Quarters, or 7 miles northeast of Middle River.

A flood warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday for parts of northern Maryland, including Baltimore, Harford and Montgomery counties ;and Baltimore City.

A flood watch is in place for the I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and District of Columbia through late tonight. Scattered instances of flooding are expected. There is a potential for more widespread flooding with considerable impact, the NWS said.
