2 Winter Storms To Target MD This Week: Latest Forecast

Maryland could see a mix of winter weather this week as two storm systems fueled by blasts of Arctic air target the state, according to the latest forecasts.

The Baltimore and D.C. areas just missed Monday's snowstorm, which dumped 3 to 6 inches of snow on parts of southern Virginia, including Blacksburg, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Richmond. Following a cooler Tuesday, temperatures will warm again on Wednesday with highs in the mid-40s, according to the National Weather Service.

With the warmer temperatures, the Baltimore area could see rain showers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, forecasts say.

For those living or traveling to Maryland's westernmost county, a blizzard warning and winter weather advisory are in effect for Garrett County from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday.

"Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 7 inches, with locally 8 to 12 inches possible on the western-facing slopes above 2,500 feet along and west of the Allegheny Front. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph," the alert stated. "Visibility one-quarter mile or less."

Snow chances return to the Baltimore area this weekend, with a pair of systems predicted to impact the region.

A weak disturbance passing through could, depending on its track, bring a period of light snow or flurries on Friday into Friday night, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. Snowfall could range from a coating to an inch or two.

AccuWeather forecasters said the first storm could fizzle out before reaching the Atlantic Seaboard. However, if the storm can tap into enough moisture, snow may extend all the way to the coast in the mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

The second and larger part of the storm will follow as a new surge of Arctic air arrives in the region.

This part of the storm will try to strengthen as it reaches the Atlantic coast Saturday night and Sunday, where the air may be cold enough for snow or a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain, according to AccuWeather's forecast.

"Because the coldest air may be delayed a bit near the Atlantic coast, it is not quite a sure bet for all snow along the I-95 corridor of the Northeast this weekend," AccuWeather Senior Storm Warning Meteorologist Eddie Walker said.

The exact timing of the weekend system remains uncertain, but if it tracks more north, the Baltimore region could see more rain than snow.
