5 Questions With Annapolis High's New Principal Sue Chittim

In June, Annapolis High School Principal Don Lilley announced that Sue Chittim would be succeeding him as head of the school in the fall.

Chittim brings with her more than 20 years of experience as an educator. She has also been active with several girls' lacrosse groups across Anne Arundel County and was coach of the AHS team during her tenure there.

Patch caught up with Chittim recently for a quick question and answer session.

Here is part one of the interview:

Annapolis Patch: You share a history with Annapolis High School. Talk a little about that.

Sue Chittim: I taught at Annapolis High School right out of college (Virginia Tech 1986 – Math Education BA) in the Math department from 1986 until 1999. I was also the head and assistant lacrosse coach for the girl’s lacrosse team from 1988 until 1995 and 1999 until 2003. I believe that any successes that I have had instructionally throughout my career were forged while teaching at Annapolis.

Patch: What were you doing immediately before being named as principal?

Chittim: 2010-2011 – Administrative Trainee at Northeast High School

2011-2013 – Assistant Principal at Glen Burnie High School

I loved my administrative experiences at both schools and learned a great deal. I feel as if I effected positive change for both teachers and students as I was afforded many experiences by both Principals and took on leadership roles as often as possible.

Patch: What made you interested in this role as principal?

Chittim: I feel as if my 28 years in the system and the varied roles that I have taken on and been afforded have prepared me for the position. I completed my Masters degree thesis around data collected at Annapolis High School as I have always been passionate about achievement for all student groups and the bulk of my experience has been at Annapolis; this increases my happiness about returning to the land of the Panther.

Patch: What's it like to be back in those halls again?

Chittim: It is fantastic! I have constant déjà vu as I walk through the halls remembering former students and co-workers. I have such positive memories of my time at Annapolis thus being back in the building has been exhilarating.

Patch: Do you have any immediate plans of action upon the start of school?

Chittim: Building upon the successes and the vision of Don Lilley who I have known for many years. I am honored to follow him as we share a passion for growth for all students and access to the best education for all students.
