ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Sometimes called Patriots Day, Sept. 11 has become a national day of remembrance honoring the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Several services in Anne Arundel County will pay respects, including one event that benefits a veterans nonprofit.

Americans felt a collective trauma as first one and then another plane flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. As the truth dawned on people watching from their TVs that America was under attack, another plane took aim at the Pentagon. A fourth was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania in a final act of heroism by passengers who realized their flight had been hijacked.

At least 2,973 people lost their lives in the attacks. The somber anniversary is marked across the country with memorial services, moments of silence and community events.

A joint wreath laying will be held Wednesday in Millersville by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at county police headquarters, located at 8495 Veterans Highway. County Executive Steuart Pittman will attend, as will Fire Division Chief David Chen and Police Chief Amal E. Awad. The public is invited to join.

The U.S. Naval Academy also hosts annual events to remember the victims, including its 14 alumni who died in the attacks.

Midshipmen on Tuesday placed 2,977 small U.S. flags along Stribling Walk in remembrance of the victims. Fourteen flags are larger to represent the Naval Academy alums lost.

On Wednesday, the Naval Academy will hold the “9/11 Remembrance Run.” Midshipmen will continuously run with the U.S. flag from Glenn Warner Field/Luce Hall starting at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers. The event ends in T-Court around 5:20 p.m., the time when the final tower fell. Groups of four to six midshipmen will complete the run in timed increments.

The Naval Academy will then have an evening reflection on T-Court. There will be a moment of silence and remarks by Naval Academy officials and New York City Firefighter Lt. John Breen. If there's severe weather, the 9/11 Remembrance Run and the T-Court ceremony will be moved inside to Halsey Field House.

The Travis Manion Foundation, which supports families of fallen veterans, is organizing its annual 9/11 Heroes Run in Annapolis. The 5K and one-mile races start Sunday at 11 a.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Participants must register in advance. More information is posted here.
