ANNAPOLIS, MD — Crews will start replacing the deck of the eastbound Bay Bridge span this month. The work, which will continue the existing lane closures, is expected to run through spring 2025.

Workers will use the existing off-peak daytime closures to prepare the work areas for night-time shifts.

Weather permitting, crews will continue closing the entire eastbound span at night. The westbound span will remain open for two-way traffic with one lane going in each direction.

Crews will remove at least one section of the deck each night. That same night, they will replace it with a new section that was already built off-site.

The Maryland Transportation Authority will use temporary joint-connection grates to let the eastbound span reopen each morning.

"While the work is significant, the MDTA has designed the project to limit traffic impacts while maximizing safety for our contractors and customers during this crucial work," the MDTA said in a Monday press release.

This $140 million project was approved in October 2022. The MDTA said this is the first phase of a decades-long plan to upgrade the eastbound span, which is more than 70 years old.

Utility relocation started in spring 2023. Repairs to the steel superstructure began last summer and will finish this summer. The project concludes next spring when the deck is completely replaced.

More information on the project is posted here.
