ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Annapolis High School graduate Bill Belichick, a Super Bowl-winning head coach, was inducted into the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 13.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools said the other inductees of this class were MLB player and coach Mark Budzinski (Severna Park), former Navy boxing coach Emerson Smith and standout multi-sport athlete Jenny Parsons (Glen Burnie).

Former South River baseball and basketball coach Kenny Dunn was honored with the Bernie Walter Memorial Award for "longtime, exemplary service to Anne Arundel County athletics," AACPS said.

"Bill Belichick's football travels have taken him all over the world and will land him in the NFL Hall of Fame one day. Those travels started in Annapolis," AACPS said on Facebook.

Before leading the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl victories, Belichick was the starting center for the Annapolis Panthers in 1969, The Capital said.

Belichick would study film with his father, who The Capital said was the scouting director and special teams coach for Navy football from 1956 through 1989, making him Navy's longest-tenured assistant coach.

Belichick played college football at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

After graduation, he joined the Baltimore Colts as a special assistant in 1975. He bounced around the NFL before gaining league-wide attention by winning Super Bowls in 1987 and 1991 as the New York Giants defensive coordinator.

That earned Belichick a five-year stint as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, but he was fired after posting a single winning season during that stretch.

Belichick was the head coach of the New York Jets for one day, but he resigned because he was uncomfortable leading a team that was for sale.

Less than a month later, Belichick was hired as the New England Patriots head coach.

Belichick posted a 266-121 regular-season record during his 24 seasons in New England, where he coached from 2000 until this January.

Belichick's 333 head coaching wins, including the playoffs, are second all-time only to Hall of Famer Don Shula's 347 victories.
