A pedestrian was hit on a highway in Anne Arundel County, police said. The pedestrian was airlifted to a hospital.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle Friday morning on an Annapolis highway, authorities said.
The Maryland State Police Annapolis Barrack said it was called around 8:20 a.m.

Troopers said the pedestrian was walking in the travel portion of the roadway and tried to return to the shoulder when they were hit by a passing vehicle. Authorities do not yet know why the pedestrian was in the travel lanes.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command said it airlifted the injured pedestrian to a hospital.

The crash temporarily shut down westbound U.S. Route 50/301 at Interstate 97 North, the Anne Arundel County Police Department said.
All lanes reopened by 9:12 a.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration said.
The collision remains under investigation.
