Driver Injured After Car Collides With Truck, Plunges Off Chesapeake Bridge

The driver's car collided with a tractor-trailer, according to a report.

One woman is hospitalized in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries after her car collided with a truck and plunged from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Friday evening.

Two-way traffic is running on the westbound span, Maryland Transportation Authority officials said in a Tweet, as engineers inspect the bridge structure for damage.

A state traffic camera showed traffic moving slowly on the westbound span at 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The Associated Press reports the driver, a 22-year-old woman, was able to climb to safety after her car collided with a tractor-trailer and fell 40 feet off the bridge. The incident happened about a quarter-mile into the span, above water that was about 8 feet deep, according to the report.
