ANNAPOLIS, MD — Additional speed cameras could soon be installed in Annapolis, and officers want feedback on the proposed locations.

The cameras could be coming to the 1100 block of Tyler Avenue, Duke of Gloucester Street, Edgewood Road and the 1400 block of West Street. Respectively, those locations are in a residential neighborhood, downtown, another residential community and a busy road that's home to the Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library.

"The safety of our residents is our top priority," Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson said in a Sept. 18 press release. "While we move forward with this important expansion, we want to hear from our community members. Their input is crucial to help us identify the most critical locations and ensure the program is implemented in a fair and transparent manner."

The State of Maryland and the Annapolis City Council recently expanded the areas available for automated speed enforcement. Previously, speed cameras were permitted in school zones, Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The expansion allows speed cameras in residential districts with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or lower.

Police hope the cameras "deter unsafe driving behaviors, particularly in areas with a history of speed-related crashes, such as school zones or high-volume corridors."
