ANNAPOLIS, MD — Crews will repair part of the Severn River Bridge this week in Annapolis. The short-term roadwork could cause delays.

Workers will close the right lane of westbound U.S. Route 50 (John Hanson Highway) between the Maryland Route 2 (Ritchie Highway) on-ramp and the Severn River Bridge.

The 24/7 closure starts Monday evening and runs through this Saturday, weather permitting.

Only a small portion of the bridge itself will be closed.

Though the closure only affects a short section of the road, highway officials still warned drivers to plan ahead.

"Drivers, particularly those traveling from southbound MD 2 onto westbound US 50, must remain alert as they merge into the US 50 travel lanes," the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration said in a press release. "Drivers should plan on extra commute time and consider using alternate routes."

This project will replace damaged guardrails, concrete aprons and posts. Crews will start placing the protective concrete barriers Monday at 8 p.m. Signage will alert drivers of the closure.

The State Highway Administration said the closure "is necessary to ensure worker safety due to the proximity of the work area and traffic on westbound US 50, as well as the required time for the new concrete to achieve its necessary load-bearing weight."

Contractor TeamCam Services of Linthicum will perform the work.

Marylanders can call the State Highway Administration District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603 to learn more.

A list of all state highway projects is posted in the project portal. Drivers can check real-time traffic with the live cameras available at chart.maryland.gov.

"The State Highway Administration understands the closures will inconvenience some travelers and asks all motorists to please stay alert and be patient as you pass through the work zone," the agency said.
