Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues Presents 2011 Disability Awareness Day Awards

Giant Food and Lauer's in Pasadena were both honored businesses.

The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues has announced recipients of the 2011 disAbility Awareness Day (DAD) Awards presented at the event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Westfield Annapolis mall.

At the annual disAbility Awareness Day the public talked with individuals with disabilities, their family members, and 40 exhibitors by service-providing agencies that had information on resources.

Besides the DAD Award to Carolyn P. Fiume of Odenton and the Disability Leadership Award to former Commission Chairman Alan Vandendriessche, awards went to employers who have hired those with disabilities or removed barriers to those with disabilities.

Honored businesses included Best Buy of Annapolis; Giant Food in Crofton, Pasadena and Severna Park; Lauer’s Supermarket in Pasadena; Michaels in Annapolis; WAWAs in Edgewater and Millersville; and Holmes Lawn Care Inc.

Accessibility Awards, given to companies that have worked to remove barriers at their businesses, went to Nordstrom Rack, Historic Inns of Annapolis-Calvert House, Fawcett Boat Supplies, Harley Davidson of Annapolis, b.b. Bistro, and Elm Street Development Inc.

The County Executive’s Public Service Awards went to the following county employees: Robert Wallace of Anne Arundel County Circuit Court; Wendy Scarborough of the county Department of Recreation and Parks; and Lizzie Allen-Jones, Sherry Bryson, Patricia Hammond, and Rodney Tasker, county Department of Aging and Disabilities.
