William Michael Smedley, 96, Born in Chicago. He joined the Naval Academy faculty in August 1947 and retired with the rank of Professor Emeritus in January 1987. His combined military and civilian service at the Naval Academy exceeded 45 years. Died Feb. 23. (From John M. Taylor Funeral Home)

Michael "Mike" Wayne Schafer, 39, a 22-year resident of Edgewater, died suddenly at his home on Feb. 20.
