A man attacked his sleeping roommate with a dumbbell, Annapolis Police said. He was charged with attempted murder.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A man attacked his sleeping roommate with a 25-pound dumbbell and was charged with attempted murder, police said.

Officers said they were called Friday around 12:56 a.m. for an assault in the unit block of Hearthstone Court. That's located in the Annapolis Overlook community off Forest Drive.

Authorities said they met with the victim, who had a laceration to his forehead that was actively bleeding.

Police said they arrested the suspect, 25-year-old Nicholas Leng Smythe of Annapolis.

  • Attempted second-degree murder (Felony).
  • First-degree assault (Felony).
  • Second-degree assault (Misdemeanor).
  • Reckless endangerment (Misdemeanor).

A judge held Smythe without bond on Monday, the case file says.

The records say a peace order was filed against Smythe, ordering him to stay away from the victim.
