According to police, Walkup was trying to cross Ritchie Highway just north of Jumpers Hole Road. He was reportedly wearing dark clothing and was not walking at a designated crosswalk. Police said he has no fixed address.

Police said the vehicle struck Walkup in the southbound lane. A preliminary investigation into the case indicates that pedestrian error was the primary cause of the crash, along with Walkup's lack of visibility to the driver.
