Most Naval Academy Staff Return to Work
The government shutdown is still in effect, but civilian employees at the Naval Academy returned to work Monday.
A provision approved by the federal government shortly before the shutdown occurred allows for most civilian personnel to return to work at the Naval Academy.
The Pay Our Military Act allows for the recall of nearly 350,000 Department of Defense workers to their posts. Among them are most of the civilian staff of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and Ft. Meade employees.
Some won't be coming back yet due to their job descriptions not qualifying for the terms of the act, according to a USNA spokesman.
"There are a very small number of Naval Academy staff whose jobs do not meet the requirements of the recently passed Pay Our Military Act and the Department of Justice has determined that they are not allowed to return to work during the government shutdown. Each of these personnel has been notified," according to an official USNA Facebook post.
Civlian staff were furloughed a week ago due to the federal closure. The shift also canceled some classes at the academy, and made others run on a skeleton crew. But things should be returning to normal shortly at the academy, just in time for the academy's 238th birthday.
