Officers Assaulted, 5 Teens Arrested On New Year's Day: Anne Arundel County Police

Officers were assaulted on New Year's Day in Anne Arundel County, police said. Five teens and one adult were arrested.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — Police officers were assaulted on New Year's Day in northern Anne Arundel County, authorities said.

Police said they arrested five teenagers and one adult, seizing a loaded handgun from a fleeing suspect.

Officers said they stopped a black Mercedes on Ritchie Highway near Shelly Road in the Glen Burnie area around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday.

"While officers were speaking with the driver outside of the vehicle about a registration violation, several occupants exited the vehicle and began assaulting the officers in an attempt to hinder their efforts," the Anne Arundel County Police Department said in a press release.

During the altercation, authorities said they saw one suspect trying to flee the scene with a black bag that was inside the car.

Police said they stopped that suspect and found a loaded Polymer 80 handgun in the bag.

With the assistance of backup officers, authorities said they "were able to restrain the combative subjects."

Police said all occupants of the vehicle were arrested and charged.

Officers identified the arrestees as:

  • 21-year-old Jerlmell Gary Johnson Jr. of Brooklyn, Maryland
  • A 17-year-old male from Severn
  • A 16-year-old female from Brooklyn, Maryland
  • A 14-year-old female from Brooklyn, Maryland
  • A 17-year-old female from Brooklyn, Maryland
  • A 15-year-old female from Brooklyn, Maryland
