Rabid Raccoon Found at Fort Smallwood Park

A rabid raccoon was discovered at Fort Smallwood Park in Pasadena Monday, health officials said.

The raccoon was discovered Monday at the gate house of the park, and tested positive for rabies, according to a press release.

Anne Arundel County health department officials are now looking for visitors who may have come into contact with it. 

It is the third rabid raccoon found at an Anne Arundel County park since September. One was found at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis on Sept. 12, and another was found at Downs Park in Pasadena on Sept. 20.

"Anyone who had contact with a raccoon should call the Anne Arundel County Department of Health without delay at 410-222-7256, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 443-481-3140 after business hours. Anyone whose pet was bitten or scratched by a raccoon should call County Animal Control at 410-222-8900," according to the release.

Rabies is spread by being bitten or scratched by an infected animal, such as a raccoon, fox or bat. It can also be contracted from the animal's saliva if it comes into contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or any open wounds.

Rabies is a fatal disease and preventative treatment must be started immediately, according to the release.
