Fed Up E-ZPass Users Launch Petition To Resolve Billing Issues

Thousands of Maryland EZ-Pass users have signed a petition requesting that Gov. Larry Hogan launch an investigation into the billing system.

MARYLAND — Thousands of Maryland EZ-Pass users have signed an online petition requesting that Gov. Larry Hogan launch an investigation into the toll service's billing system.

"Marylanders have been dealing with the Maryland Department of Transportation issues with EZ Pass tolls for several months now," a portion of the Change.org petition reads.

According to the petition, the billing issues are endless. Some of the problems users said they have encountered include receiving $25 late fees without having received any notices, transponders not working, old bills from 2020 going out a year later, as well as threats of withholding vehicle registrations and tax refunds.

"Stop charging my credit card multiple times a week when I am not even going through tolls and already paid my back tolls," one person commented on the petition.

"I'm signing because I have been wrongly charged multiple times and constantly have to fight with them for my money back when it's their toll lanes and cameras incorrectly tagging my car," said another person who signed the petition.

The petition, which was created by Caroline Huddleston of Centreville, is calling on Gov. Larry Hogan to appoint a task force to address the billing issues and withhold fines while the problem is looked into.

"We are also requesting that the actions and leadership of MDTA [Maryland Transportation Authority] be reviewed," the petition reads.

As of Wednesday, more than 19,000 people have signed the petition. According to Huddleston, she plans to send the petition to Hogan's office for review.

According to WMAR-TV, the MDTA has a board meeting scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. One agenda item focuses on toll operations and customer service.
