Rep. Elijah Cummings Of Maryland Undergoes Heart Surgery

The Democratic congressman will return to work in a few days, a statement from his office said.

BALTIMORE, MD — Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland is recovering from minor heart surgery Thursday after undergoing a trans arterial aortic valve replacement on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins Hospital. According to a statement from the congressman's office, the procedure "was used to correct narrowing of the aortic valve."

"This minimally invasive surgical procedure repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve," the American Heart Association explains. "Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place."

Cummings' statement says he will stay in the hospital for a few days, and he will return to his normal schedule once he's out.
