Flood Warning Issued In MD: National Weather Service

Strong storms prompted the National Weather Service to put parts of Maryland on alert.

MARYLAND — Heavy rain Monday night in the Baltimore-Washington region put the area on alert. A flash flood watch is in effect for parts of the state, and a flood warning has also been issued.

Officials issued a flood warning after radar showed 1 to 2 inches of rain had fallen before 10 p.m. Monday, with another 1 to 2 inches possible overnight.

Drivers should turn around if they see roads covered with water of an unknown depth.

These areas are under a flood warning from 9:50 p.m. Monday until 4 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Howard County
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George's County

Forecasters said these locations in particular may flood: Baltimore, Columbia, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Bowie, Severn, Olney, Pikesville, College Park, Crofton, Middle River, Greenbelt, Beltsville, Elkridge, Riviera Beach, BWI, Historic Ellicott City, Fort Smallwood State Park, Sparrow Point and Back River.

Due to storms arriving before a cold front Monday night, the National Weather Service also placed five counties and Baltimore under a flash flood watch.

These jurisdictions are under a flash flood watch from 6 p.m. Monday until 2 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Howard County
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George's County

About 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall through Monday night, with up to 4 inches possible in some areas.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday for southern Maryland. Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties are included.


Earlier, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook due to the potential for storms that could cause damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado.

In addition, the middle Chesapeake Bay and nearby waters are under a gale warning Tuesday afternoon and evening due to the potential for strong winds.

Looking ahead, officials said there was a slight threat of severe thunderstorms and flooding Friday.

Here is the Baltimore forecast from the National Weather Service:

Monday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. High near 77 and low around 59. Gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Patchy fog after midnight. Overnight, the chance of rain increases to 90 percent, with 0.5 to 0.75 inch possible.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with showers likely. High is 65 and low around 53. Thunderstorms possible before 8 a.m. and chance of fog before 11 a.m. Wind gusts up to 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent, with about 0.1 to 0.25 inch rain possible.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 67. North wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Mostly clear, with a low around 49.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 64 and low around 52 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Friday: Showers. High near 64 and low of 51. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent during the day, dropping to 50 percent at night.

Saturday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64 and low around 50. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.
