$500K Winning Powerball Double Play Ticket Claimed In Harford County

An Aberdeen man has claimed a $500,010 winning Powerball Double Play ticket. He plans to pay off his bills with his winnings.

ABERDEEN, MD — An avid lottery player from Aberdeen ended up winning $500,010 from a Powerball Double Play drawing.

“I always play Double Play. For a dollar more, why not?” he told Maryland Lottery officials when he claimed his winnings.

That strategy paid off as “Double the Fun” matched all five white balls, only missing the Powerball number on the Double Play drawing. That was good enough to give him a second-tier prize of $500,000. He also matched a couple numbers on another line for an additional $10.

Double Play is a second drawing that happens 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing, giving players a chance to win up to $10 million with the same ticket numbers. Players can add the feature to Powerball tickets for $1.

The winner and his girlfriend didn’t realize he won the big prize until a few days later. The Harford County couple were home watching TV when he checked the ticket.

“I thought my eyes were playing tricks,” he said. His girlfriend said she was concerned because he became so excited.

“We are still in shock,” the girlfriend added when they arrived at Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim the prize.

The winner plans to use his prize to pay off bills, he said. The second-tier winning ticket was sold at Carsins Run Liquors at 3501 Churchville Road in Aberdeen. For selling the ticket, the Harford County retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus.
