Hazmat Team, Firefighters Respond To Muriatic Acid Spill At Middle School

The county hazmat team and firefighters were called to a Harford County middle school Friday for a report of a muriatic acid spill.

PYLESVILLE, MD — On Friday, firefighters were called to North Harford Middle School for what first responders called a muriatic acid spill.

When firefighters with the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company and county hazmat team arrived on the scene, the building had been evacuated. The hazmat team checked the air quality and cleaned up the acid spill, according to the fire company.

No injuries were reported.

Muriatic acid is a commonly used name for hydrochloric acid, a strong, corrosive acid that is often used as a cleaning agent for tasks like removing rust, balancing pH levels in pools and cleaning concrete. It is essentially a diluted solution of hydrochloric acid.
