Bel Air Graduation: 'Nothing Stops The Class of 2012'

The last class to walk the halls of the old building graduated Tuesday, leaving behind their own legacy.

Alysson Krchnavy, member of the , pointed out that the Class of 2012 has been through two high school buildings, , a flood and .

"You guys have weathered it all, and apparently nothing stops the Class of 2012," Krchnavy said.

Valedictorian spoke about letting your internal light shine like a candle.

"This world will be a brighter place because we shined," McIntyre said, "Bel Air Class of 2012, let's go light our world."

McIntyre was among several student speakers including Emily Rothbard, Remington Stuck and class president Emily Gryglewski. For a glimpse at Stuck and Rothbard, check out the attached video.

Gryglewski took the podium with a hop in her step—literally. She pulled out a step stool so she could stand taller, then assured everyone "that's much better."

Her speech was filled with many such moments of humor, from joking about skipping class to making sure everyone understood a Friday night at "Plumtree" meant McDonald's.

Alumnus of the year Maurice Dorsey also said a few words to the graduating class.

Dorsey said thinking over his time in high school brought back sad memories of a place where he did not feel welcomed. Dorsey was the second African American to graduate from Bel Air High School.

In 1965, when Dorsey graduated, Harford County was struggling with desegregating schools. He outlined the adversity he faced and named one Bel Air High School teacher who inspired and supported him during that time.

Dorsey told the gathered students that they will certainly face adversity in their lives and challenged them to hold tight to their faith and fortitude because those things will be tested.

"I was very fortunate to overcome my adversity and I hope yours will be few," Dorsey said.
