Coaches For The Community To Hold World's Largest Game Of Catch

A Harford County nonprofit is planning a family-friendly fund-raiser with the goal of raising money for pediatric cancer research.

ABINGDON, MD — A Harford County nonprofit aims to hold the world's largest game of catch this summer, with a special event at the end of June.

Coaches for the Community is teaming up with the Potter Baseball Tour and Friendship Wine & Liquor to raise money for a Baltimore research center looking to cure pediatric cancer called CureSearch.

On Wednesday, Coaches for the Community was granted permission from the Harford County Liquor Control Board to sell beer and wine at its June 30 event at The Barn, behind Friendship Wine & Liquor.

In fall 2020, the nonprofit Coaches for the community was formed mainly by educators and coaches in the school system and recreational leagues, according to Shane Grimm, vice president or Coaches for the Community. Members perform random acts of kindness, he told the liquor board. This is the nonprofit's first time partnering with another organization to help with pediatric cancer research, he said. Volunteers will handle security and carding for alcohol.

“Love this event. Good luck, guys,” Liquor Board Chair Paul Majewski said after the board approved the license for the organization to sell alcohol at the gathering.

The Coaches for the Community event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 30 at The Barn behind Friendship Wine & Liquor, at 3520 Woodsdale Road in Abingdon. The world's largest game of catch will be at 7 p.m.

In addition to beer and wine for adults, the event will include activities for kids, live music by Adam Almony Music, and Fast Eddie’s Pit Beef and snowballs.

"Bring your family, your gloves, and a chair/blanket for sitting," organizers said in an announcement about the event. "Join us for a fun family summer night while supporting a great cause!"
