Police ID 4 Killed In Bel Air Bypass Crash

Police said the driver who crashed head-on into another vehicle died after the Bel Air Bypass collision.

BEL AIR, MD — Three people died in a head-on crash on the Bel Air Bypass Monday afternoon, according to police, who said two others were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. One of those who had been airlifted later died at shock trauma, officials said.

The bypass was closed at Rock Spring Road for about four hours due to the investigation.

Before 1:40 p.m., police said a Toyota RAV4 headed north on the Bel Air Bypass crossed into the southbound lane and hit a Honda Civic over the MD 924 overpass.

Mary Yvonne Mejia, 54, of Bel Air, was driving the RAV4 when she tried to pass another vehicle and crashed into the Civic, according to Maryland State Police.

Mejia and a 53-year-old woman from the RAV4 who survived were flown to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment, police said. Mejia later died, according to authorities.

The driver and passenger of the Civic — Craig Charles Faunce, 34, and Allison Mae Faunce, 35, both of Joppa — were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash, officials said.

Police said the RAV4 rolled on its side, and three state troopers used their fire extinguishers to slow the flames before pulling out three people, one of whom — Mary Catherine Blosse, 73, of Bel Air — was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Route 1 was closed until about 5:30 p.m., according to state transportation officials.

The cause of the deadly crash on the Bel Air Bypass remains under investigation, Maryland State Police reported Monday night.


PREVIOUS REPORT: Multiple people died in a crash on the Bel Air Bypass that has closed the road, police said. At least one other victim was injured and flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, officials said.

The crash was reported on the northbound Bel Air Bypass at 1:35 p.m., according to the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Emergency personnel had to rescue at least one person from the wreck, officials said.

Several people were in critical and grave condition, and a medevac was called for two patients, according to Harford County fire and EMS authorities.

The Bel Air Bypass is closed, with lanes shut down between the Rock Spring Road interchange and Conowingo Road, according to the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.

."The bypass is closed in both directions for an extended period of time," officials said, noting the closure was "expected to go through the evening rush hour."

Maryland State Police is investigating the crash, which occurred near the Harford County Detention Center, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
