Emmorton Schoolhouse Officially Designated Historic Landmark

The Emmorton Schoolhouse has been officially designed an historic landmark by county officials and the Historic Preservation Commission.

Built in 1920, the two-room schoolhouse replaced an overcrowded one-room school designated for white students during segregation. Between 1958 and 1976, the building functioned as the Emmorton Special School.

BEL AIR, MD — The 104-year-old Emmorton Schoolhouse has been officially designated an Harford County Historic Landmark.

Built in 1920, the two-room schoolhouse replaced an overcrowded one-room school designated for white students during segregation. Between 1958 and 1976, the building functioned as the Emmorton Special School. Since then, the building has been used as a meeting site for local groups, as a community center, office space and a medical practice.

So far, county officials and the Historic Preservation Commission have established more than 70 county landmarks and two historic districts.
